Packing room by room

Kitchen

Pack rarely-used items first (special occasion dishes, baking equipment). Wrap plates individually and stand them on their edges; pack glasses with paper inside and out. Leave a small "kitchen essentials" box for the last day.

Bedrooms

Use wardrobe cartons for hanging clothes and vacuum bags for bedding. Keep a change of clothes and toiletries for each person in an overnight bag.

Living room

Photograph the back of your TV before unplugging cables, wrap screens in blankets or their original boxes, and take pictures off walls early.

Garage and shed

Drain fuel from mowers and dispose of paint, chemicals and gas bottles safely — removal companies cannot transport hazardous items.

Moving with children

  • Talk about the move early and involve children in packing their own rooms.
  • Pack a box of favourite toys and bedding to open first at the new home.
  • Arrange childcare on moving day if you can — it makes the day safer and calmer.

Moving with pets

  • Keep pets in a quiet room or with a friend on moving day, away from open doors.
  • Update microchip details with your new address.
  • Keep cats indoors for a period after moving so they settle into their new home.

How much does it cost to move house?

The cost of moving depends on the size of your home, the distance, access and extras such as packing and storage. Always get a written, fixed quote so you can budget accurately. Get a free quote from Friends Logists UK, or read about what's included in our house removals.

In short

Start planning about 8 weeks before moving day: declutter, book your removal company 2–4 weeks ahead, pack from the least-used rooms first, notify your council, utilities and bank, and prepare a first-night box with essentials.

8 weeks before moving

  • Set a moving budget and a target date.
  • Declutter room by room — sell, donate or recycle what you don't need.
  • Get quotes from removal companies. Request a free quote from us.
  • If you rent, check your notice period and plan your end-of-tenancy clean.

4–6 weeks before

  • Book your removal company and confirm the date.
  • Order boxes and packing materials, or book our packing service.
  • Arrange storage if your completion dates don't line up.
  • Start packing spare rooms, lofts and garages.
  • Book time off work for moving day.

2 weeks before

  • Notify utilities, broadband, TV Licensing and insurers of your moving date.
  • Set up Royal Mail post redirection.
  • Check parking at both properties and let us know about permits, lifts or restrictions.
  • Use up frozen food and plan simple meals.

The week of your move

  • Pack everything except daily essentials, and label boxes by room.
  • Defrost the freezer at least 24 hours before moving.
  • Confirm arrival times with your removal team.
  • Pack your first-night box and keep valuables and documents with you.

Moving day

  • Take meter readings and photos at both properties.
  • Walk through with your movers to point out fragile or special items.
  • Do a final check of every cupboard, loft and shed before leaving.
  • Leave keys as agreed with your agent or landlord.

After you move

  • Check furniture placement and unpack the essentials first.
  • Register with a local GP and dentist.
  • Update your address with DVLA, HMRC, your bank and employer.
  • Update your council tax and join the electoral roll.

Packing tips from professional movers

  • Use small boxes for heavy items (books) and large boxes for light items (bedding).
  • Wrap plates individually and pack them on their edges.
  • Fill empty spaces with paper so contents don't shift.
  • Keep screws and fittings in labelled bags taped to the furniture.
  • Label each box on the side with the room and a short contents list.

FAQs

Moving house FAQs

How far in advance should I book a removal company?

Book 2–4 weeks ahead for most house moves, and 6–8 weeks ahead for large homes, office moves or popular dates like Fridays, month-ends and school holidays.

What should I pack first when moving house?

Start with items you use least — spare rooms, lofts, garages, seasonal clothes, books and decorations. Leave everyday kitchen items, toiletries and bedding until last.

What goes in a first-night box?

Kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, phone chargers, toilet roll, toiletries, medication, a change of clothes, bedding, basic tools, snacks, pet supplies and important documents.

Who do I need to tell when I move house in the UK?

Your local council (council tax and electoral roll), DVLA, HMRC, your bank, GP and dentist, energy, water and broadband suppliers, TV Licensing, your insurers, your employer and the Royal Mail if you want post redirected.

What should I not pack in a removal van?

Hazardous items such as gas bottles, fuel, paint, chemicals, aerosols and fireworks can't be transported. Keep valuables, important documents, medication and chargers with you.

How many boxes do I need to move house?

As a rough guide, a one-bedroom flat may need 20–30 boxes and a three-bedroom house 50–70, depending on how much you own. Decluttering first reduces the number you need.
